Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, of Manila, president of Caritas Internationalis, was keynote speaker at the recent International Diaconate Centre (IDC) study conference in Lourdes, France. Deacon Gerald DuPont, from Galveston-Houston, Texas, USA, was elected IDC president.
Gerald succeeds Rev Professor Klaus Kießling, whom many Australian deacons will remember from our Hobart conference. Klaus had served as president for 12 years and did not stand for re-election. Gerald is the first non-European to lead the organisation. Gerald is known for his work as chair of the US National Association of Diaconate Directors – the NADD has a permanent seat on the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops – and as Director of the Diaconate in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, Texas.
NAD chair, Deacon Nick Kerr. was elected to the IDC’s leadership at the conference. The IDC has a board of five. It includes the president, vice-president and the wife of a deacon. Then there are eight elected delegates. Nick is one of the elected delegates. Two additional delegates were appointed for regional balance. For the first time all continents are represented in the IDC’s leadership group.
